zp2 submenu buttons

There are a number of submenus (which will appear at the top of the plot window) that are accessed by typing various letters on the graphics screen. Each submenu has several buttons. When a submenu is displayed, you can't do anything else except modify the values of the submenu buttons. You can also get help for each button by placing the cursor on top of the button and typing "h". If you place the cursor anywhere but on top of a button and type "h" you will get general help on the submenu. To close a submenu, hit the spacebar or re-type the letter that was used to open the submenu. You can also jump to another submenu by typing the appropriate letter for that submenu.

Some buttons have values that are toggled by clicking a mouse button on top of the button. Others have numerical values that can typically be decreased by clicking the left mouse button, increased by clicking the right mouse button, or returned to the default value by clicking the middle mouse button. Or, with the cursor on top of the button, you can just type in a specific value. When you finished typing in a value, you need to hit , or click any mouse button, to signal that you have finished entering the value.

The range submenu is accessed by typing "r" on top of the graphics screen. Use these buttons select the offset range ("X min" and "X max"), time range ("T min" and "T max"), azimuth range ("Az min" and "Az max"), sequential trace number range ("First trace" and "Last trace"), receiver number range ("min tnofr" and "max tnofr"), shot number range ("min espn" and "max espn"), and maximum number of trace to plot ("Max traces").

The scale submenu is accessed by typing "s" on top of the graphics screen. Use these buttons to adjust the horizontal and vertical scale ("X scale" and "Y scale"), and to set the size of the inset map ("map len mm"). A value of "auto" for one of the scale values means that zp2 will choose an appropriate scale so that the plot fits nicely within the device's page size.

The print submenu is accessed by typing "t" on top of the graphics screen (sorry, but "p" is reserved for entering pick mode!). Use these buttons to select the page orientation ("Orientation"), and set whether the image will be black & white or color ("Color/b&2"). Clicking on the "PRINT" button creates a postcript plot of the data using PGPLOT's postscript drivers. Clicking on the "Create GMT files" button creates a set of GMT data files and a c shell script file that can be executed to create a postscript plot of the data using GMT. The "Plot info" button toggles on/off the writing of key plotting parameters down the right side of a postcript plot.

Click here to download a sample zp postscript file (gzipped, 170 kb).
And here is the equivalent plot created using GMT (i.e., clicking on the "Create GMT files" button then runnning the csh script file called zp_gmt.csh. (gzipped, 200 kb).

The mute submenu is accessed by typing "m" on top of the graphics screen. Use these buttons to select the type of mute ("Mute type"), create mutes (by clicking on the "Create" button, and then using the mouse to define the region to be muted), delete all mutes ("Delete ALL"), delete or undelete mutes for a specified range of traces (click on "Delete RANGE" and then use the mouse to specify the range of traces to be muted or unmuted). The "Mute" button can be toggled on/off to specify whether all mutes should be applied ("on") or not applied ("off"). Mutes can be saved by clicking on the "SAVE" button. Mutes are save in a separate mute file called "filename.mute", where "filename.head" is the name of the zp2 header file corresponding to the segyfile you are viewing.

This image shows examples of the different mute types.

The kill submenu is accessed by typing "k" on top of the graphics screen. Use these buttons to turn off/on the plotting of traces that have been marked as killed ("Visible"), kill or unkill a range of traces according to the setting of the "Range" button by clicking on the "Select RANGE" button and using the mouse to select a range of traces. The flags which mark a trace as killed can all be deleted by clicking the "DELETE ALL" button. Kills can be saved by clicking the "SAVE" button. The flag for marking a trace as killed is written in the zp2 header file.

This image shows an example of killed traces.

The annotation submenu is accessed by typing "l" (for "labels") on top of the graphics screen. Use these buttons to select the value that will be used to annotate a trace at the top of the plot (e.g., trace number, shot number, receiver number, etc.) ("anno word"), set the annotation interval ("anno int") and annotation text size ("anno (mm)"). You can also change the axis label annotation size ("axlab (mm)"), change the position of plot title ("Title pos.") and modify the x and y axis labels and plot title. The label/title indicated in the "Edit-->" button is shown in the large text box next to this button. If this button is set to "default", zp2 will use a default label. The text in this button can be modified by placing the cursor in this box and typing.
Type a carriage return to signal end of string.
Type a "backspace" or "del" to delete character to the left
A number of emacs-like editing functions are available to make modifying the current value easier:

ctrl-x deletes the entire string
ctrl-d deletes character to the right
ctrl-z changes the string back to it's inital value
ctrl-a moves insertion point to beginning of string ctrl-e moves insertion point to end of string
ctrl-f moves insertion point one point to the right
ctrl-b moves insertion point one point to the left
ctrl-k deletes everything to the right of the insertion point

Do not click the mouse button in this box, as this will generate a "A", "D" or "X" character depending on whether the left, center or right mouse button is clicked, respectively.

The gather submenu is accessed by typing "g" on top of the graphics screen. Use these buttons to expedite plotting a common offset gather. For these buttons to be of any use, your SEGY file must be comprised of successive shot or receiver gathers. E.g., if your file comprises successive shot gathers, each with 240 channels, and you wanted to plot a common offset (i.e., receiver) gather, you would set the "Channel #" button to the desired channel. The "Max. chan." button should be set to the number of channels per gather. Clicking "DONE" will automatically change some of the plotting parameters so that, after closing the gather submenu and hitting the spacebar, the selected gather will be plotted.

This submenu can generally be ignored for typical wide-angle data, i.e., segy files which comprise a single shot or receiver gather.
